4 Regional Hot Dog Types

Blog

From the East Coast to the West Coast and everywhere in between, American major cities throughout the nation have their own take on that American classic, the hot dog. Whether you're looking for a loaded style hot dog like Chicago's take, or something bare bones like a New Yorker, each city has a unique recipe. Throughout the course of this brief article, you will learn about a few of the most popular regional hot dog types.

Chicago

Chicago has a unique take on the hot dog recipe. From just one look at a Chicago style hot dog, you know you're in for a filling experience. Resting on a poppy seed bun from a bakery like Klosterman Baking Company, a Chicago style hot dog is boiled to perfection and then garnished on a bed of various veggies including sweet onion, hot peppers, delicious sweet relish, and most importantly, served with a pickle shear off to one side of the bun. Flavorful and complex, there is nothing quite like a Chicago style hot dog.

Dallas

The Dallas style hot dog is known throughout the country, but not by its original namesake. Dipped into corn flour and then deep fried, most people know the Dallas style dog by the nom de plume of "corndog." A corndog is usually served on a stick and is a favorite among those who regularly attend state fairs. As far as condiments go, nothing compliments a corndog quite like the one two punch of ketchup and mustard.

New York

New Yorkers tend to enjoy things on the go and without frills. This translates to their hot dogs. A New York style dog is grilled to perfection and then served on a white bun with spicy mustard and occasionally a bit of sauerkraut. Don't ever ask a New Yorker if they want ketchup on their dog. It's simply not part of the recipe.

New Jersey

New York's neighbor to the west enjoys things a little bigger. Thick, 100% ground beef dogs are served on an Italian roll in this heavily Italian-American state. As for toppings, you'll want to try out grilled peppers, onions and occasionally fried potatoes. Every now and then you'll find someone loading a bit of mustard on one of these bad boys.

This brief guide should have given you some idea of what to expect from hot dogs across the United States. Head out to your nearest stand and find what kind of dogs are available to you!
